My homelab
I started out with an Ubuntu server because it was the easiest to set up. First came infrastructure services like Nginx, then services like Nextcloud that I actually use myself and that have replaced the usual cloud services for me.
Right now my server runs a small booking website, a personal cloud, a Gitea instance and a few helper services.
Mistakes I made
Looking back, I should have gone with something like Proxmox from the start and isolated my services more from day one. Backups also came quite late and were manual at first. They're automated now.
